Interdisciplinary Multimedia at the 3rd International Artists Meetings in Vela Luka 1972
Frtiz, Darko
International Artists' Meetings were international manifestations of visual and related arts that were held in Vela Luka (Croatia) in 1968, 1970 and 1972, but they are skipped from any valorization afterwards. Meetings were originally conceived as a summer colony for visual artists to work in the medium of mosaic, but in the next two editions the interdisciplinary syntheses of various art disciplines, urbanism, architecture and finally multimedia approach were carried out. The elaborate form of organization of creative work in a variety of settings, personal relations, collective and creative team work in conjunction with the local administration and the economy can be traced, which is articulated through several modalities of participation of a wider number of local people in creative art processes. Within 1968 Meetings, sound artist Luc Ferrari designed a multimedia performance art piece, described as “folk festival”, whereby he tried and eventually successfully included the local population. 1972 Meetings was held with the official theme entitled 'The problem of creating new forms of scenes by integrating citizens, film, television, music and visual artists' and propelled participations by local citizens. International Artists' Meetings, with their interdisciplinary approach and experimental and research character in the sphere of fine arts and architecture, as well questioning various levels of participation in them, presents a benchmark in the understanding and implementation of the contemporaneity. Meetings have offered new models to approach human creativity through innovation and freedom, as well as new organizational models of cooperation between local government, and business and culture.
